The South Australian Government propose to construct a Linear Park both north and south of the Wara Wayingga Tennyson Dunes Conservation Reserve. Stage 1 looks at the northern end, linking the Conservation Reserve to Semaphore Park. More about this project can be seen here.
The Tennyson Dunes Group support the idea to link with northern coastal trails and the location of the proposed path (ie not in the dunes). However, we see the potential to improve the design. Instead of a wide, straight concrete path we would rather see a meandering ecologically sensitive trail such as already exists within the Conservation Reserve (the Tennyson Dunes Discovery Trail).
By incorporating these aspects in the design, the trail would achieve multiple benefits:
- help to protect the biological corridor for animal and plant movement
- provide a fantastic opportunity for environmental education
- serve to thematically link the Conservation Reserve with the northern dunes
We encourage you to read our full submission.
Lovely content, definitely look forward the new campaign
Keen to see the full Coast Park Plans come to fruition after all these years of “conflict”. I hope the state government can complete the shared use path, using the existing path, with suitable environmentally friendly materials, so that everyone can have access and appreciate this unique and special coast. The addition of an education and interpretive facility with toilets could be a “Reconciliation” Project, promoting the special Geology, Kaurna and European History, including Capt. Charles Sturt and Fred Bucknall – (State Heritage Listed Estcourt House) etc. This could be a great attraction for Nature and beach lovers, all visitors and tourists, walkers and cyclists etc.
I have been lobbying for the declaration of the proposal for the connectivity of the whole of the 70 kms of The Coastal Path, that almost everyone wants. Its benefit to recreation and tourism will be supercharged by it being connected end to end. I am pleased the Tennyson Dune Group supports it and accept its recommendations as being worthy of serious consideration, taking into account the importance and fragility of the Wara Wayingga Tennyson Dunes Conservation Reserve. The area is my locale and I have also been a coastal cyclist from Kingston Park to Outer harbour for many years so it is important to see the paths connection occur.
